2002 Hyundai Elantra
There were not much changes made to the Hyundai Elantra for the model year 2002.
The powertrain was retained while minor changes were made with both interior and
exteriors. A new body type though was introduced, the Hyundai Elantra GT Hatchback.
The 2002 Hyundai Elantra is available in two models: the 4-door Elantra GLS sedan
and the 4-door Elantra GT hatchback. The hatchback has double the cargo space
of the sedan. It does, however, share the platform, suspension, engine and transmission
of the sedan. It has a sportier look, and its optional packages give it an edge
over the GLS sedan. As expected, the hatchback would come at a higher price than
the sedan.
There were not much changes made to the GLS model, comparing it with last year's
model. It still uses the same 4-cylinder engine and suspension was much like the
2001 model. Enhancements, though, were made to the engine as it now has dual overhead
cams, 4 valves per cylinder, multipoint electronic fuel injection, and coil direct
ignition. Other changes are concentrated on making it have smoother and quieter
ride.
There were fewer changes made for the interior of the base model. Standard features
were still the same, although the optional four-wheel disc brakes with ABS were
now also available for the GLS trim. Enhancements that could be made for the sedan
were rather made for the hatchback. It comes with a standard sport suspension,
alloy wheels, and leather upholstery. For safety, the GT model is equipped with
front side air bags and 4-wheel disc brakes that may come with the optional antilock
braking system with traction control.
The GLS is still a good buy even though it has not much improved since the past
year. It is still the functional subcompact sedan with sophisticated features
offered at a low price. The GT however may be a better buy, as it offers better
and improved features, of course, at a higher price.
