1998 Hyundai Elantra
After a major redesign in 1996, Hyundai expected to see Elantra come up to a
level that can match its competitors. It was not, however, able to come up with
expectations as it is still dominated by other brands like the Honda Civic and
the Nissan Sentra. Although it was unable to come up with its expectation, it
gained much on quality improvements, being constantly praised for it and its excellent
driving behavior. And because of its affordability, it is still Hyundai's second
bestseller among its cars.
Only a few changes were made to the Hyundai Elantra in 1998. It comes in the
base and GLS trims, available either as a subcompact sedan or a wagon. It is now
more powerful with the standard 1.8 liter 130 hp DOHC 4 cylinder engine, one of
the most powerful engines in its class. The 4-speed automatic transmission became
a standard for the GLS; although the 5-speed manual transmission for the base
model is more preferred as it can exploit more the power of its engine.

Standard features were also improved for all trims, as all models now comes with
added features like an AM/FM stereo cassette, reclining front bucket seats and
height adjustable front seatbelts. Safety features were also improved, as it now
includes a rear window defroster, rear door child safety locks and side window
defrosters. Antilock brakes and dual front airbags are now standard for the GLS
trim, and optional for the base model. The
Hyundai Elantra is known as the "value car", and its 1998 model have lived up
to its name. It offers an affordable car with standards way above its price. Although
it still can't match the level of quality, features and performance of its competitors,
it rates well on other areas. It has one of the most powerful engines in its class,
and is the roomiest among the subcompact sedans.
