1992 Hyundai Elantra
To fill in the gap, both in size and in price, between the entry level Excel
and the midsize Sonata, Hyundai introduced the Elantra in 1992. It is aimed to
give good competition to the already popular sedan cars like the Honda Civic,
Toyota Corolla, and Nissan Sentra. Although it cannot fully match the power, conveniences
and the established reliability of these famous brands, the Hyundai Elantra offers
a good alternative with its reasonable price, decent fuel economy and roomy interior
space.
The 1992 Hyundai Elantra was introduced with two trim models, the base model
and the fancier GLS model. Both models share the basic engine and powertrain specifications.
The Elantra is equipped with a 1.6 liter twin cam inline type 4-cylinder engine
that produces a reasonable 113 hp of power and 102 ft-lb of torque. It is equipped
with a standard 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive and an optional 4-speed
automatic transmission with overdrive. Equipping it with the 4-speed automatic
transmission reduces its power output to 105 hp.

Inside out, the 1992 Hyundai Elantra is a very basic car. It has a roomy interior
that can seat a maximum of five passengers and still give them enough leg room
and head room. However, comfort and convenience features are minimal, having only
power windows and door locks plus a cassette player as standard feature for the
GLS model. For the base trim, all comfort and conveniences come as optional features
which includes the standard features for the GLS trim plus sunroof and air conditioning,
the last two being optional features for the GLS model as well.
The Elantra has a poor NHTSA crash test rating. This poor rating may be attributed
to the lack of safety features both on the base and the GLS trim. The only safety
feature available is the power windows which is only available for the Elantra
GLS.
